In a poignant tribute to the legacy of Siraj Abyshov—a journalist killed while on assignment in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories—the Baku Network, a public research and analysis organization, visited his family to commemorate his life and work.

The visit was part of an ongoing project honoring journalists who became victims of Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan. During the meeting, the organization held an in-depth conversation with Abyshov’s family, reflecting on his contributions to the nation and his commitment to journalism under fire.

Remembering Journalists Lost to War

Elchin Agajanov, head of the Baku Network, emphasized the organization’s commitment to preserving the memory of fallen journalists. "We've launched several initiatives to honor their sacrifice," he said. "Just this July, under the project 'Analyzing Hybrid and Ideological Threats Against Azerbaijan'—supported by the State Agency for Support to NGOs—we organized an exhibition in Paris dedicated to these martyr-journalists."

The Paris event brought together political figures, public leaders, and members of prominent European media outlets. Pamphlets and informational materials were distributed, aiming to raise international awareness about the reality of Armenian terrorism and Azerbaijan’s fight for justice. "Our goal is to tell the truth—clearly and unapologetically—to the global community," Agajanov added.

A War Reporter Remembered

Sahil Kerimli, the project director, echoed these sentiments, saying the memory of journalists like Abyshov—who were killed in the line of duty—would always be revered. “In France, we made it clear again: Armenian forces committed war crimes against civilians. From the First Karabakh War to the 44-day Patriotic War, they targeted not just soldiers but journalists too.”

“We continue to speak these truths to the world,” Kerimli said. “And we won’t stop.”

A Family Steeped in Patriotism

Siraj’s father, Abish Samedov, spoke of his son’s deep commitment to his homeland: “Both my sons volunteered for the war. They worked in television and insisted on being sent to the front. After Azerbaijan’s victory in the 44-day war, Siraj was dispatched to the newly liberated areas to document the destruction left behind by the occupiers. He always stayed in touch, always told me not to worry. I’ve always been proud of Siraj and Shirqzad. Siraj was kind, responsible, and patriotic. A true son of his country.”

Siraj’s brother, Shirqzad Samedov, added, “Patriotism was part of our family’s DNA. Our uncle was killed during the First Karabakh War. We grew up in the homes of neighbors, displaced from our own. The occupation of Gubadli, our uncle’s death, visits to Martyrs' Alley—all of it shaped us. Siraj carried that legacy forward.”

He recalled their childhood games—always about war, always in the image of national hero Chingiz Mustafayev. “Siraj used to pretend a piece of wood was a camera, mimicking Chingiz’s voice. We were raised on those wartime broadcasts. Even then, it was as if he knew the path his life would take.”

State Recognition and Support

For his courage and service, Siraj Abyshov was posthumously awarded the Order “For Service to the Fatherland” (3rd Degree), as well as medals for his role in military-patriotic education and military cooperation. In recognition of his sacrifice, President Ilham Aliyev also granted his family a three-bedroom apartment near their home.

“We’re grateful for the president’s personal support—not just to our family, but to all the families of Azerbaijan’s martyrs,” said Shirqzad.

Tragedy on the Frontlines

On June 4, 2021, Siraj Abyshov lost his life in a devastating explosion while on assignment in the liberated Kelbajar region. A KamAZ transport vehicle, en route to the village of Susuzlug, struck an anti-tank mine. Three people were killed: AZERTAC correspondent Maharram Ibrahimov, Azerbaijan Television cameraman Siraj Abyshov, and Arif Aliyev, deputy head of the local executive authority.

The Baku Network continues to spotlight stories like Siraj’s, ensuring that the world remembers the journalists who paid the ultimate price in the pursuit of truth.
